Web Connections in our daily lives
There has always been an ongoing battle between the conflicting ideas of how technology can make an impact on our lives. It has proved to be, at times, the greatest example of human development. Its use through medicine, work efficiency, emergency situations, and much more, makes us look to a brighter and more reliable future. However, it's no doubt that with this rapid development, comes the widespread effect it has on others who do not need it for its important uses. People use the internet many hours of the day for various reasons. Some more on the beneficial side. Such as looking up a recipe or watching a tutorial on how to fix something. But does that mean the social use of the web is drowning in a negative light? It's true that a leading cause of major depressive disorder comes directly from the idea that people spend too much time browsing social media and shutting themselves out... But this has been such a heavily pressed concept that many may not see the positive uses of social media and how it correlates to human connections.
The opportunities of meeting people or staying in touch has increased immensely through the use of the Internet. People who would never cross paths for a day in their life are now within moments of seeing each others faces or hearing each others voice. And of course, those we know but do not get to see often enough can now keep closer tabs and hold a better connection with us. It's always the people who didnt develop alongside these opportunities that have the most skeptical views.
It is a reasonable thought, however, because its hard to wrap your mind around the idea of trusting someone so far away or who you haven't met. Its true though that the people who do take that leap, run into some amazing experiences. What skeptics might not know, is that those who are connecting with people online, are also being safe about it. Trust is proven through actions, never words alone. And people dont often go running to somebody so far away within the first few conversations. It takes a bond and shared trust to allow those people to expand their horizon. But its not like those who meet through the Internet HAVE to meet face to face. Its always possible to maintain a healthy long distance relationship. Some find it hard to fathom, but online friends are certainly real friends. Like it was mentioned before, trust is through actions, not words. A friend is someone who is there for you, ready to help you, ready to offer their time. And it doesn't take a "real life" interaction for those qualities to take place. Why, however, do we find such negativity in certain areas of social media users? Many people who heavily use social media as a daily thing to get by are often the ones who are feeling most lonely. Its ironic to think about. Its always stressed that people should go out and enjoy their surroundings. However, most will not do that unless they have their phone. Its been proven that those who learn to be content without a mobile device are the ones who function better, have an improved mood, and are more socially active. There are no benefits to staying on media all during the day and night. It's even a leading cause for lack of sleep from teens to young adults. Something so simple as staying off the internet and putting your phone away becomes such a difficult task. So, here's the real question... Is the internet a positive or negative thing for us in a social aspect? The answer is something that seems to be applied in many other things as well... Moderation.
There needs to be a limit on both ends of the spectrum. Do not close yourself off, living without trust and not opening up to the opportunity to develop better connections... But also, even more importantly, do not waste your days away on internet alone. Staying plastered to electonic devices will only hurt more in the long run. What you do on your phone and other devices, is actually very important too. How is your time being spent when on your phone? Are you aimlessly scrolling through Facebook for the fifth time... Or are you making plans to see a movie with your friends? There's a reason its called "social" media. Its not meant for you to see how others are being social. Rather, to give you the opportunity to venture out as well. It seems thats where many people have lost out. Its easier to look at what you could be doing than to actually do it. And it seems the more we enjoy the convenience of using a keyboard and app, the less we remember how to interact in person. Its remarkable, the number of people who are too nervous to speak over the phone... Who use their devices as a way to rid anxieties when put in a social situation. The development of the internet was a wonderful thing... But its only too good to be true when we make it that way.
We cannot live in a world that does not exist. And we only depress ourselves more by attempting to do so. If we could learn to balance the blessing without making it a curse, we would be able to understand what it's like to truely feel happy living in this developing world. It would prove to the skeptics that things aren't so bad... And it would prove to the shut-ins that the world has so much more to offer. There is no right or wrong answer as whether or not the Internet is good or bad for us... Because we're the ones who determine that as individuals. Not as a whole. The world around us is never going to slow down for one or the other. And instead of trying to repel or dive into it, we should just walk alongside it at our own pace. But, of course, never by ourselves. We weren't meant to walk alone. And we never will.
